Maternity leave can last up to 28 weeks (37 weeks if twins or other multiples are born), the minimum being 14 weeks. Women usually start maternity leave 6 to 8 weeks before their due date and it can end 6 weeks after labour at the earliest. Any legal employment gives right to maternity leave. It is you who decide about the length of maternity leave.
During maternity leave you are entitled to maternity benefit or parental benefit (see the section on benefits
). How to proceed?
Go and see your gynaecologist, who will establish the due date as well as the starting date of maternity leave and will fill in the relevant form. You then submit the form to your employer. If you are self-employed, take the form filled in by the gynaecologist directly to the Social Security Administration (Správa sociálního zapezpečení).
