A woman usually starts her maternity leave before her due date and once it ends, she goes on parental leave, which can last until the child turns three years.
Maternity Leave
Maternity leave can last up to 28 weeks (37 weeks if twins or other multiples are born), the minimum being 14 weeks. Women usually start maternity leave 6 to 8 weeks before their due date and it can end 6 weeks after labour at the earliest. Any legal employment gives right to maternity leave. It is you who decide about the length of maternity leave.

During maternity leave you are entitled to maternity benefit or parental benefit (see the section on benefits).

How to proceed? Go and see your gynaecologist, who will establish the due date as well as the starting date of maternity leave and will fill in the relevant form. You then submit the form to your employer. If you are self-employed, take the form filled in by the gynaecologist directly to the Social Security Administration (Správa sociálního zapezpečení).

Parental Leave
Parental leave starts when maternal leave is over and can last up until the child turns three. Beyond the age of three, you can to ask your employer for leave related to taking care of your child. The employer is obliged to grant parental leave. The father can also ask for parental leave, on the condition that he is stated in the child's birth certificate.

During parental leave you can receive parental benefit (see the section on benefits).

How to proceed? Submit a written application for parental leave to your employer before your maternity leave is over and state the expected length of the parental leave.

Leave for Taking Care of a Child
Once your parental leave is over, you can ask your employer for leave for taking care of a child. During this time, you can continue to receive the parental benefit in case you chose the 4 year option.
Leave in the Case of a High-Risk Pregnancy
In the case of a high-risk pregnancy, you are entitled to sick leave, which includes sickness benefits (provided that you take part in sickness insurance, i.e. contributions for sickness insurance are paid, either by your employee or by yourself).
